Tour Plan

1 Kleifarvatn

The picturesque lake Kleifarvatn is fed by underwater springs and often changes its water level. In this area there is the distinctive pillow lava.

2 Krýsúvík -Seltún

Sulfur was mined in Krýsúvík in the past and there are numerous hot springs and solfatars (boiling mud springs). Krýsúvík is located in a tectonically very active area and the frequent earthquakes repeatedly lead to hot springs drying up and new ones emerging. Scientists are convinced that the Reykjanes peninsula will permanently separate from Iceland and form an island.

3 Brimketill

Erosion created a natural 'pool' right in the cliffs by the sea. According to legend, the giant Oddný regularly bathed in this pool. From a platform you have a beautiful view of Brimketill. You cannot swim in this 'pool'. If there are strong waves, a visit is unfortunately not possible for safety reasons.

4 Gunnuhver

Gunnuhver is a large solfatare which, according to legend, got its name around 400 years ago after a female spirit who had caused trouble for a long time got caught in a trap and fell into the spring.

5 Reykjanesvíti

The Reykjanesvíti lighthouse on the southwest corner of the peninsula is a prominent landmark. Directly on the coast there is a bizarre rocky landscape with cliffs that are full of bird life. A bronze sculpture by Todd Mc Grain commemorates the last two great auks that were killed in 1844, making this bird species extinct. From here you have a view of the tuff rock Karl and the island of Eldey (Fire Island), which is home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies.

6 Bridge between continents

The Eurasian and American tectonic plates are drifting further and further apart and Iceland lies exactly on this seam. A bridge was built over a gorge created by continental drift on which you can easily walk from Europe to America and back.

7Garður

The small town of Garður (approx. 1,500 inhabitants) is located at the northwestern tip of the peninsula and has two lighthouses. The large lighthouse still shows ships the way to Reykjavík, while the small lighthouse is disused and now houses a small café. You can observe many species of seabirds and, with a bit of luck, even marvel at whales off the coast.
